"Select Practical Writings of Robert Traill" offers a rich exposition of Puritan theology, masterfully presenting the heart of Reformed doctrine with a pastoral warmth that beckons the reader into a deeper understanding of God's grace. Traill, a stalwart of the faith in the tumultuous times following the Reformation, provides a series of sermons that dive deep into the themes of grace, justification by faith, and the Christian's battle against sin, grounding his exposition in the Apostle Paul's letter to the Galatians, specifically Galatians 2:21.

The essence of Traill's argument rests on the pivotal doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone, challenging the reader to consider the absolute sufficiency of Christ's atoning work on the cross. Through a meticulous examination of scripture, Traill dismantles any reliance on human works for salvation, underscoring the impossibility of achieving righteousness through the law. His discourse on the nature of God's grace as freely given, yet profoundly costly, offers a profound meditation on the heart of the gospel.

Traill's sermons are not mere theological treatises; they are pastoral letters written with a shepherd's heart. He navigates the reader through the complexities of Christian doctrine with the tenderness of one deeply aware of the soul's struggles. His practical applications extend a comforting hand to those wrestling with assurance of salvation, emphasizing the need for a heartfelt reliance on Christ's completed work.

One of the most compelling aspects of Traill's writings is his relentless pursuit of the glory of God in the salvation of sinners. He lays bare the grandeur of divine grace and its power to transform the most hardened heart, making a passionate plea for the believer to live in the freedom and joy of being justified by faith. Through his exposition, Traill invites the reader into a deeper appreciation of the grace that not only saves but sanctifies, encouraging a life that magnifies the grace of God in daily living.

"Select Practical Writings of Robert Traill" stands as a beacon of Reformed spirituality, offering timeless wisdom for the contemporary reader. It calls believers back to the foundational truths of the Christian faith, encouraging a robust confidence in the gospel and a life lived in the light of God's overwhelming grace. Traill's work is a treasure trove for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the grace that underpins the Christian life, making it an essential read for those desiring to grow in faith and devotion.

Robert Traill (1642-1716) was born in Elie, May, 1642.  After the usual prepatory studies, he was sent to the College of Edinburgh, where he distinguished himself in the several classes.  He devoted his life to the ministry and the cause of the church of his fathers.  This devotion was greatly manifested by his attendance upon Mr. James Guthrie, minister of Stirling, on the scaffold of martyrdom, 1661.  In 1666, in consequence of some copies of the Apologetical Relation, a work (penned by John Brown, of Wamphray) hated by the prelates, and condemned by the Privy Council to the flames, found in his home, he was obliged with his mother and brother to go into hiding.  It is reported that Robert Traill was in arms with the Covenanters when they were routed at Pentland Hills.  Because of this, he found it necessary to flee to Holland, where his father was already, in 1667.  Sometime around 1669, he returned to London and commenced his ministry there.  In 1677, while visiting Scotland, he was apprehended and arraigned before the Privy Council.  He refused to clear himself by their unlawful oath and was, upon little evidence, sentenced to imprisonment on the Bass rock.  He was released after three months and returned to London where he continued to officiate as pastor of a Presbyterian congregation until his death, in May, 1716.
