The Cup that Jesus Drinks
"And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." - Matthew 26:39
When Jesus prays about letting the cup pass, he is alluding to the many images from the Scriptures about God's wrath (Isa. 51:17, 22; Ps. 75:8; Jer. 25:15; Hab. 2:16; Rev. 14:9–10 Ezek. 23:33). By going to the cross, he willingly drinks the cup of God’s wrath, all the way to the bottom. He, the sinless Savior, bears divine wrath, which rightly falls upon all those he came to save.
"On the cross Jesus suffered God's wrath in our place, therby turning it aside from us. When he cried out "My God, my God why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46), He was bearing the wrath that was justly due to us." - Jerry Bridges, The Joy of Fearing God, pg 103
The Heidelberg Catechism declares “all the time He lived on earth, but especially at the end of His life, He bore, in body and soul, the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race.”[Q. 37.]
