Morning Devotional on Ecclesiastes 7:14

"In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him."
Ecclesiastes 7:14 (ESV)

Life’s ever-changing tides can feel overwhelming. We live in a world that is constantly shifting, uncertain, and often chaotic. But in the midst of this turmoil, Ecclesiastes 7:14 offers a profound truth: both prosperity and adversity come from the hand of God. This reality anchors us, reminding us that whether we find ourselves in days of joy or in seasons of hardship, we are held in the hands of an immovable God.

God is our Rock—unchanging, steadfast, and sure. The world may be caught in a whirlwind of confusion, but our Lord does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In the midst of every storm, He remains the solid foundation upon which we stand. This truth allows us to walk through life's unpredictability with peace and confidence, knowing that our times are in His hands (Psalm 31:15).

This unshakable truth becomes our greatest comfort: God is sovereign. He has not only redeemed us through the precious blood of Christ but also called us to be His witnesses in a world that is desperate for hope. Our calm, peaceful, and joyful response to adversity becomes a testimony that we do not belong to this passing world. We are citizens of a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:28).

Though the world around us may reel from uncertainty, we stand firm in Christ. And yet, God does not remove us from this world after redeeming us—He sends us back into it with a purpose. As Jesus prayed, “As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world” (John 17:18). We are His ambassadors, sent to bear witness to a dying world. And how we respond to the chaos around us speaks volumes about the hope we have in Him.

Our response to adversity—our calm in the storm, our joy in the midst of sorrow—bears witness that our hope is not anchored in the temporary things of this earth. We belong to another kingdom. As we face adversity, we do so with the knowledge that God, our unmovable Rock, is sovereign over all. In this way, we bring good tidings to all who would listen, inviting them to trust in the One who offers peace and salvation.

The world is passing away (1 John 2:17), and all its desires are fleeting. But those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved (Psalm 125:1). We are called to live in this world, but we do not belong to it. We are pilgrims, sojourners on the way to an eternal home. And as we walk through life’s trials and uncertainties, we shine as lights in the darkness (Philippians 2:15), proclaiming the peace and hope of Christ to a watching world.

When the storms of life come, let us remember that God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). He is our unchanging fortress in a world of constant change. Though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, God is still with us. We will not fear. We know that we are secure in Christ, and this reality empowers us to face each day with courage, knowing that no trial or adversity can separate us from His love.

In Christ, we have been given eternal life, and we are united to the One who never changes. Therefore, let our lives be a living testimony to the world that our peace and joy are not dependent on the circumstances around us. As those who have been redeemed and adopted into God’s family, we are called to bring His good news to a world in chaos, a world that desperately needs the peace that only He can give.

Let this truth anchor your soul: while everything around you may be shifting and uncertain, God is immovable. And He has sent you back into the world with a mission—to proclaim the hope that is found in Him alone. As you go about your day, may your calm, peaceful, and joyful response to adversity point others to Christ, who is the sure foundation for all who trust in Him.

Prayer:
Lord, You are our unmovable Rock in a world of chaos. Help us to trust in You completely, knowing that both prosperity and adversity come from Your hand. As we walk through trials, let our response bear witness to the hope we have in Christ. Use us as Your ambassadors to bring good tidings of peace to a world in turmoil. Thank You for calling us by name and sending us back into the world to proclaim Your salvation. Amen.
