Is Jesus's Intercession is Always Answered and Efficacious?

A visitor asked, "If Jesus's intercession is always answered and efficacious and infallible why many christians lose the faith and return to sin? Since Judas is lost that mean the Jesus 's intercession for Judas was a failure or it mean Jesus never prayed for Judas? If a christian backslide it mean Jesus's intercession for him was a failure or it mean Jesus never prayed for him?"

Response: The question of whether Jesus’ intercession can fail is beautifully answered in His High Priestly Prayer in John 17. Jesus explicitly states that His intercession is for those whom the Father has given to Him: “You granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him” (John 17:2). This highlights that Jesus’ intercession is particular and rooted in God’s sovereign choice. He further clarifies, “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours” (John 17:9). Thus, His prayer is not for all humanity indiscriminately but for the elect, those given to Him by the Father before the foundation of the world.

Regarding Judas, Jesus’ words in John 17:12 are telling: “While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.” Judas’ role was ordained in God’s sovereign plan, fulfilling prophecy, and Jesus never interceded for him as one of His own. Judas was among the disciples outwardly, but he was not truly one of those given to Christ for eternal life. His betrayal demonstrates that proximity to Jesus does not guarantee salvation; only those united to Christ by faith through the Spirit are truly secure.

When Christians backslide, it does not signify a failure of Jesus’ intercession. His prayer in John 17:11-12 is that the Father would protect His own: “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name… While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me.” True believers may stumble or sin temporarily, but Jesus’ intercession ensures that they are ultimately preserved in faith and brought to glory (Philippians 1:6; John 10:28-29). Apparent loss of faith often reveals either a temporary fall or that someone was never truly a believer (1 John 2:19).

Jesus’ intercession is always effective for those it is intended for—those given to Him by the Father. Judas was never among this group, and backsliding Christians, if truly His, are upheld by His ongoing intercession and will be restored by His grace. This underscores the perfect efficacy of Jesus’ work as our intercessor and the unshakable security of salvation for His people.
