This month we celebrate our 25th Anniversary - We Thank the Lord for You.

We are delighted that you use the free resources available at Monergism. Our mission is to provide open access to scripturally sound and theologically rich Christian literature, ensuring cost is never a barrier to building a robust Christian library. While these resources are free to all, sustaining this ministry requires funding.

Last year, over 1 million new visitors accessed our resources. Given that less than 1% of readers donate, we humbly ask you to consider supporting this ministry. If everyone reading this gave just $5, we could meet our 2024 budget in no time.

Every contribution makes a difference - whether it's a monthly gift of $20 or a one-time donation of $10, $25, $100, or more. You can also read our business plan to see how your gifts are used to further this mission.

Monergism (CPRF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.

Sacramental Discourses: 25 Sermons in Preparation of Communion (eBook)

by John Owen

in ePub , .mobi & .pdf formats

This is a outstanding book which will lead you into wider, richer biblical pastures for a fuller biblical piety and understanding of the Lord's supper. One of our greatest needs today is to put down deep roots into the gospel. Virtually every significant Christian leader from within the Reformed/evangelical tradition who plans on serving Christ faithfully and fruitfully over the long haul, should read John Owen with care and appreciation..John Owen’s twenty-five discourses on the Lord's Supper are a balm to the believer but are little known and little read, even among those who value his massive contribution to theology. Owen appears less concerned to define and defend doctrine than to comfort and help even the weakest of believers as they come to the Lord’s Supper. The great and lasting value of this work comes from Owen’s obvious desire to promote ‘delight in Christ, thankfulness unto him, and the keeping of his word’, in all who partake.

Own defends the Calvinistic-Vermiglian tradition and yet establishes his own sacramental position. The sacraments are, as Calvin calls them, 'instruments' of grace. It is through these that, according to Owen, God confirms and seals His covenant with His people. For Owen the exercise of faith calls us to submit to the authority of Christ, to rest on the veracity of Christ, and to understand in some measure the spiritual relation between symbols and grace.
