God's CanonThe Work of the Trinity in Salvation (eBook)
Edited by John Hendryx

The Trinity Saves! The Bible teaches that the Father elects a particular people, the Son redeems them and the Holy Spirit convicts, regenerates and unites them to Jesus Christ. The Trinity works in harmony to make certain God's eternal will is accomplished (Eph 1:3-5; John 6:63-65), infallibly bringing it to pass. The following are carefully selected essays and sermons on Monergistic Regeneration from the history of the church which demonstrate that this is the silver thread of orthodoxy which God has revealed in his Scriptures to His faithful throughout the centuries. May God be glorified and the saints be edified in the reading of them.

In a recent interview,  J.I. Packer was asked "which theological issues he would commend young Christian leaders to study in order to be prepared for the next fifty years." His number one answer was Regeneration. "He said that the doctrine of regeneration has not been fully appreciated by many who do not understand that to be born again with a new heart and new nature means that we have at our deepest level a new identity and new passionate desires for God’s Word and ways. He commended to all young Christian leaders a thorough study on the doctrine of regeneration." This eBook has aggregated the following resources with this very thing in mind.

Christian ThumbnailsThe Silver Thread: Augustine vs. Pelagius in Church History (eBook)
Edited by John Hendryx

According to Pelagius salvation comes about through choosing to become a Christ-follower, that is, by following Christ's moral example, rather than Adam's. A works-based merit-generating self-salvation project.  On the other hand, Augustine taught the biblical doctrine that salvation is a free gift of mercy to those sinners whom God joins to Christ, clothing them in his righteousness and making them alive by His grace.

B. B. Warfield said, "Augustine [was one of the early founders] of Roman Catholicism and the author of that doctrine of grace which it has been the constantly pursued effort of Roman Catholicism to neutralize, and which in very fact either must be neutralized by, or will neutralize, Roman Catholicism. Two children were struggling in the womb of his mind. There can be no doubt which was the child of his heart. His doctrine of the Church he had received whole from his predecessors, and he gave it merely the precision and vitality which insured its persistence. His doctrine of grace was all his own: it represented the very core of his being . . . it was inevitable, had time been allowed, that his inherited doctrine of the Church, too, with all its implications, would have gone down before it, and Augustine would have bequeathed to the Church, not "problems," but a thoroughly worked out system of evangelical religion. . . . The problem which Augustine bequeathed to the Church for solution, the Church required a thousand years to solve. But even so, it is Augustine who gave us the Reformation. For the Reformation, inwardly considered, was just the ultimate triumph of Augustine's doctrine of grace over Augustine's doctrine of the Church." (Warfield, Calvin and Augustine, 321-22)

Description: "Free will I have often heard of, but I have never seen it. I have always met with will, and plenty of it, but it has either been led captive by sin or held in the blessed bonds of grace."
- C. H. Spurgeon

Many of you would, no doubt, agree that there is a great need to recover the gospel in our age.  In order to begin moving out of the present state of chaos in the church, we need to subvert many of the false narratives borrowed from the world that have taken hold of us.  The intent of this book is both to dismantle one of these core inconsistent narratives in light of Holy Scripture and then replace it with a consistent and biblical one. I will propose that one of the most dominant reasons for the current downgrade in the Church is the presuppositional lens through which Scripture is read called “libertarian freedom”. To begin to understand the full extent of the crisis we must begin here. As we define and then closely explore the problems with libertarian free will we will not only expose its outright errors but perhaps even more importantly, its inconsistencies which may have previously gone unnoticed by some. This will help us all think more clearly and replace the unbiblical with the biblical. This error is a old as the fall.

The earliest notable dispute on this issue was between Augustine and Pelagius. It had to do with the extent to which the natural man is responsible for his or her own regeneration (the new birth), i.e. whether the work of God in regeneration monergistic (God alone) or synergistic (a cooperation of man and God). The  Council of Orange (529 A. D.) condemned the Semi-Pelagian doctrine that fallen creatures, although sinful, have an island of righteousness which made them morally competent enough to contribute toward their salvation by taking hold of the offer of the grace of God through an act of their unregenerate natural will. Orange upheld Augustine's view that the will is evil by corruption of nature and becomes good only by a correction of grace. This eBook is a collection of classic writings through the history of the church on this issue. So without further ado, let’s define the issues.

Description: There are very few things in this world that are more misunderstood and distorted than the gospel. Even among believers there is a great deal of confusion  about what the gospel is. Perhaps this is because, due to our corrupt bent, we often gravitate toward making a savior of (otherwise good) things like morality, in the place of Christ. But, as we hope to to point out in this book, the gospel is not about what man does, but rather, about what Christ did. In God's economy both moral and immoral people are equally alienated from God. This may be counter-intuitive but it is often the case that goodness keeps people from God. In fact many people avoid Jesus by avoiding sin because they are trying to become their own saviors ... attempting to justify themselves. As such, Christ calls sinners to repent of both good (and bad works), for we have no righteousness of our own.  Thus when Christ shows me my utterly desperate condition, my self-righteousness is renounced and self-complacency laid waste. It is then (and only then) that we come to recognize Jesus ALONE as the Savior .. and, by the grace of God, say AMEN to the gospel as the saving event of Jesus, the Messiah, which is grounded in the Scriptures concerning His life, death, burial and resurrection.

These truths will all be traced more deeply in the pages of this book as we explore the writings of some of the the clearest expressions of the gospel from church history.

Consider JesusThe Sufficiency of Jesus Christ Alone: Classic Essays on the Doctrine of Justification (eBook)
Edited by John Hendryx

Description:
"He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities." - Isaiah 53:11

The central difference between biblical and non-biblical views of salvation is that the former believes Jesus Christ is sufficient to save to the uttermost but the later believes that while Jesus is necessary, he is not sufficient. To clarify what I mean, both Roman Catholics and other synergists, would rightly anathematize anyone who claims one can be saved without the grace of God. But this was never what the debate was about. The Reformers never claimed Rome believed you can be saved apart from grace. The debate of the Reformation was never ever about the necessity of grace, it was always about the sufficiency of grace. This is the essence of the difference between synergists and those who affirm that justification is by Christ ALONE. There is nothing more essential to our position and this is what sets it apart from other all other types of theology. What we mean by the word "sufficient" is that Jesus Christ meets all the conditions for us that are necessary for our salvation. It further means what Jesus does for us on the cross meets all of God's requirements for us, including giving us a new heart to believe and obey (Ezekiel 36:26). In other words, we believe the Bible plainly teaches that, apart from grace, sinners are unable to obey the gospel, any more than the law, without Christ implanting a new heart in us. The old one will not do. What Jesus did for us in his life, death and resurrection is not only necessary, but completely sufficient to save us. This was the point of the Reformation's affirmation of the principle of Solus Christus, or Christ alone. God's love for His own is unconditional so He makes sure the job gets done.

Doctrines of GraceWhat the Bible Says About the DOCTRINES OF GRACE

Available in both Kindle .mobi and ePub formats

A simple categorized scripture list - the entire paper is a list of scriptures, with the exception of a few brief explanatory notes, underscores the truth that this is God's own word and teaching; and the fact that it would be categorized would facilitate the ready comparison of scripture with scripture so as to lead one to a full-orbed understanding of the biblical teaching. Although I found a few good scripture lists of that nature available online, none of them was laid out in quite the progression that I was looking for, and so I developed my own. I'm posting it here with just the scripture references. The study is also available in print from Monergism Books.
