- He Descended into Hell - Cornelis P. Venema
Before explaining the historic Reformed understanding of this article in the Creed, it is necessary that we consider two traditional views of Christ's descent into hell. Because this article follows upon the description of a series of events in sequence — "suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried" — and comes immediately before the confession of our Lord's resurrection from the dead, the oldest understanding has taken it to refer to a literal descent of our Lord to the place of the dead, hell or "hades," which occured after His death and before His resurrection on the third day. This literal understanding of our Lord's descent into hell, has taken two forms in traditional Roman Catholicism and Lutheranism.
