The hands-off Theodicy
In response to John Piper's recent comments on the bridge collapse, Arminian Roger Olson (among other things) said, "The God of Calvinism scares me; I'm not sure how to distinguish him from the devil." [my comment: this assertion by Olson effectively breaks fellowship with all evangelicals who believe the Bible teaches meticulous providence. Can you fellowship with someone who believes your God is the Devil? And if God truly does ordain all things that come to pass (Eph 1:11) then Olson has also charged God with being the Devil. There should be a public call to repentance for this.
For years we have disagreed irenically about our differences but this is beyond any level of constructive discourse. It charges all Calvinists with worshipping the Devil. This being the case, the he must also charge King David with the same when he said that it was God that bid the person curse him, Or when Job said, "the Lord gives and the Lord takes away ... and Job did not sin in all he said", Olson, given his unbiblical logic must ascribe Job's comments as erroneously charging God with the Devil's works. Or when Jesus said the sin was not greater in those whom the tower of Siloam fell - and that unless you repent you likewise will perish... Given Olson's view, Jesus must be mistaken to think that the tower's falling on people were unrelated to God's judgement that we all justly deserve, even though Jesus clearly points for us to repent before God lest this happen to us as well. I am baffled how a person who is a Christian can so quickly forget that our deaths in this world all come from Adam's sin. Is Olson claiming that this is not God who determines the times of our death, but rather the Devil and that God cannot bring good out of evil?. Is this his conclusion? ]
Roger Olson, in shadowboxing with John Piper, is using the recent bridge collapse in Minnesota to score points against Calvinism. Let's consider his arguments, such as they are:
