Legalism is a person's attempt to attain or maintain salvation through his or her own works or merit. Obedience, on the other hand, is a work of grace by the Holy Spirit renewing the heart which responds in gladness to its salvation by willing obedience. A quickened heart WANTS to obey not in order to be justified but because it is justified (and renewed when he/she was united to Christ).
